How important are disk brake shields?

Hey Scotty,

I would appreciate your take on this.

2011 Toyota Tacoma Base SR5, 2.7 engine, 100,288 mi, garaged in Massachusetts.

I recently replaced the front rotors (Bosch Quietcast) and pads (Akebono) and noticed the brake dust shields are quite deteriored as the sheet steel appears to be a very thin gauge.  How might braking performance be affected by rusted dust shields and should I consider replacing them?  Replacing the dust shields looks like it is a more involed repair as it would require pressing out the hub from the wheel bearing.  What are your thoughts?  . . . and thank you for your guidance.

Regards,

Breck Balmos

One of mine rusted away several years ago and there is no noticeable difference.

no difference.  I live in eastern canada and they typically rust and fall off after 8-10 years.  They really serve no purpose.

keeping debris out of the wheels and braking system is a purpose
