I'm looking for a car. The best options I'm finding for a CRV in my price range are the 2017 and 2019 Honda CRV with a 1.5L 4 cyl engine (CVT).
What issues, if any, are there for CRV's in those model years with the 1.5L 4cyl engine?
Should I avoid them for any reason? Are they worth getting? Is there anything I should look out for?
These ones specifically are certified pre-owned.
Thanks!
Should I avoid them for any reason?
Questionable engine. (bad injectors, oil dilution, random misfires, etc.)
Questionable transmission. (it's a CVT driving an SUV, it's not terrible but definitely not great)
They're really not as good as Toyotas' RAV4. It used to be a close race - but nowadays it's not.
Certified by whom, a dealer? What exactly does certified mean? Is there a warranty on the vehicle? What mileage, has it been inspected by an independent mechanic, not the dealer mechanic? Has it been scanned for codes? Go to carcomplaints.com and look up the vehicle you're interested in.
Unfortunately, certified means nothing anymore. I had friends looking at certified vehicles in the past and when it was put on a lift by their own independent mechanic, it was clear half the items were never touched. Buyer beware!
Thanks, I'll look at carcomplaints.com! Honda dealer certified (HondaTrue). It means they extend the warranty by the manufacturer. Miles was low on it.
I know right. I went to get a "Certified Pre-Owned" from a Honda dealer. The back windshield wiper was broken, they didn't even try to fix it before putting it out on the lot. I'm not a mechanic, but I can tell when a windshield wiper isn't turning on.
Personally, I would stay away from the current generation Honda CR-V with that tiny, turbocharged engine and CVT, especially if you plan to keep for a long time and expecting to put 200,000+ miles on it. I would look at a Toyota RAV4 or Mazda CX-5, instead.
Thanks! Toyotas are great. Unfortunately, they're so great that a lot of the currently available RAV4s are out of my price range. I've kind of been overlooking the Mazda CX-5 because of concerns for the reliability of the Mazda engines. How reliable is the CX-5?
You have been warned. Caveat Emptor.
Yup
Make up your mind first on which type of vehicle you actually need.
