HUD or No HUD, That is the question

Anyone here have a Toyota or Lexus product with HUD (Heads Up Display)?  How do you like it and is it worth getting?

I tried it on a Mazda, and I liked it.

It lets you check your speed (and whatever else it provides) without taking your eyes off the road, and it's small enough not to be intrusive.

I just wonder how it will hold up 10, 15, 20 years from now. I am trying to build a Lexus ES350 and going back and forth on getting HUD or not. It’s a $500 option.

As long as there are also conventional instruments to fall back on if the HUD stops working in 10 or 15 years just live without it.

I don't think it's worth $500

That is what Lexus charges. That’s part of the reason I am on the fence.

I haven't tried it on a Toyota, but generally they're awesome.

Yeah, especially if you live in an area infested with speed cameras.

It's much more convenient than looking down at the gauges.

The only issue I hear about with HUDs is that Mazda's older motorized units are not overly reliable, eventually they won't fold/ unfold/ begin to show random shapes.

But as far as I know Toyotas use no stinking piece of glass with electric servos and just project it onto the windshield.

That’s true, and all that information is already in the gauge cluster so I am covered if the HUD fails.
