Hyundai is replacing my dad's engine in a 2011 Elantra...FOR FREE!

Hello,

My dad's 2011 Elantra with 230,000 kms started knocking a while ago. I searched online and saw there were recalls and even a class action lawsuit for this problem. I told him to ask the dealer about it. It was doubtful they were going to do anything since the car is older now, has a lot of mileage, and he couldn't show oil change records for every 6000 kms as Hyundai recommended (he used synthetic oil and did it every 8000). The guy at the dealer said he would have to contact Hyundai and that he would try and fight for him.

Well he went in a few weeks later to provide the service records he had, and he was told Hyundai agreed to change the engine for free. They are replacing everything except the head.

He was pretty happy to say the least. He didn't expect anything and was ready to drive the car until it exploded then junk it, and now he may get another 100,000 kms out of it.

Would you say this is rare for them to do that? Or for any car company for that matter?

Be careful what you're happy about.

Count your blessings, Hyundai/Kia service for people that I know (friends, family, co-workers) has been poor including not approving warranty claims.  In any event, I am glad they are doing something here for your dad, but pray their techs screw everything back together correctly and afterwards I would have him start looking for another vehicle.

Well he got very lucky. These companies always try to find a way to weasel their way of warranties.

Scotty says they have to at 6:58

All they did was replace one crappy engine with another crappy engine.  Sell it now while it's still running well because the next time this happens, and it will, you are going to be SOL.

an $80 deposit on warranty work

wow that's a new one for me.

I will NEVER buy a car from that pathetic joke of a car company!

Well consider yourself lucky ig, usually, Hyundai and Kia dealers rip people off like mad...

my friend has a 2018 kia forte.  all maintenance done.  engine blew or bent a piston at 71k.  Kia replaced it no charge.  But this shouldn't happen.  he's 95% highway miles.

My experience has been good dealing with Hyundai directly but bad with the dealers. I had one dealer who wanted an $80 deposit on warranty work refundable once they got paid by Hyundai. Another instance I got a request for review from Dealer Rator before the car repair had been finished. They submitted a claim prior to doing any work. If they gave you a new engine good for you. Hopefully it will hold up. I got into the habit of shooting HMA in Fountain Valley CA an email and always got a satisfactory response. Don't depend on the dealer to be your advocate. The bosses tell the mechanics the priority is prepping the cars above all else.  There is no profit in warranty work.

Free is always good
