I currently own a stock 2020 WRX STI
I’m debating whether I keep the car going forward or move onto the 2022 WRX or the Corolla GR.
Reliability is always a concern, but I take care of the car as much as I can, wash it when ever I can to get salt off, rotate tires, change oil every 5k km, only put 93 gas and keep the tank full most of the time .
im just looking for some guidance. Thank you very much!
What’s wrong with your current WRX? If it’s not been a lemon to you, keep what you got.
Hello! Oh there’s nothing wrong with it, just stories of previous owners of a wrx/sti (EJ engine owners) were getting me a little worried.
I love that the car isn’t “modern”, I’ve always been a fan of more raw cars (use to own a 97 standard rav4 and I love and miss that car every day!)
But this car (with exception of gas mileage) has treated me well, just kept getting told by friends/family that I’ll wake up with the engine blown one day.
I know many of these cars are blown so to poor owners, and I don’t drive it like a race car. Sure I’ll do a pull once in a blue in safe, very controller places. But I drive the car like I drove my 97 rav4:)
I guess I let comments go to my head and wanted to make sure I don’t jump the gun!
Thank you so much for the reply!
Welcome new member!
I don’t know enough about the Corolla to comment. The new Rex is the most livable WRX ever, certainly a better daily driver than your STI.
BUT, if I am following the news in Subaruland, the STI is going to be replaced by some garbage “performance” EV. The STI purists are rightfully upset; Subaru is throwing one of the most loyal parts of their fan base (WRX/STI tuners) under the bus in order to appeal to a bunch of yuppies that will just end up buying Tesla’s anyway.
If that’s correct, then you are sitting on a car that is about to become very desirable in the near future. So if I were you, I would find out for sure what is going on at Subaru and think strategically about what you want to do over the next 5 years.
In the meantime, a well maintained 2020 STI should be plenty reliable for you.
Best.
PS: keep it stock. Let owner #2 do the mods.
Thank you so so much! I really appreciate the reply and this gave me a lot to think about:).
Also ok, won’t mess with it. I’ve done only visual upgrades, and kept anything that was replaced (fenders for example).
Thanks a billion + 1:)
Why you get rid of the late model car and buy a new one? You're going to lose a lot of money that's for sure. They're pretty decent cars. If I are you, I'd stick to it. I mean the Toyota Corolla GR is going to be very, very expensive and hard to find
Hello sir!
Yea, I ended up purchasing the car after a lease because the market boomed after my lease was up and it felt like the more affordable thing to do at the time.
I was just worried about reliability, and down the road. I’ve always been a fan of Toyota quality, but at the time of the purchase, they didn’t have the car that matched what I was looking for (standard, awd, hatch/sedan)
I just wanted to know my options and whether I should keep going with what I have. I was just worried because of all the EJ engine stories (and past owners of a similar cars)
I don’t drive it like a race car, though that doesn’t mean I don’t have the odd fun with it once in a while. And I keep it in garage always when home.
Like yourself, I very much appreciate Toyota cars (growing up and owning a 97 standard rav 4 that last for 350k and I sold just 3 years ago).
I should mentioned I do live in a winter climate country (canada) so just wanted to make sure I’m ok or if I should look at other options, especially since this car loves my wallet at the pump:)
Thank you very very much, I do really appreciate your answers and everyone’s on this thread. Thank you so much, and I hope you have a wonderful day!
