I have a 2005 Acura TL with the 3.2 V6 and 120k miles. I need to get the timing belt replaced. My question is...Could/should I attempt the repair myself? I am not a mechanic, but I am not a noob either. I have watched YouTube videos on the job, and it is making sure everything is lined up correctly that makes me nervous! Any tips or general guidance is appreciated! 🤝
Unless you did the job enough times that you are master, I would say go right ahead, otherwise, do not do that. It is not an easy job and if you mess up something, you need to tow the car to a mechanic who is willing to do this unfinished job which most mechanics do not do that.Â
When I did the head gasket job on my 02 Outback, since it was all apart, I did all that timing chain work too. I had done plenty on inline 4's and a 3.4L 4-runner v6. Never on a Subaru so I found the best video (3 part video) that was put up by a repair shop on my specific car, step by step. I have a tv in the garage so had the videos cued up and followed it while doing the job took my time and turned out like it was supposed to. Â
I just watched a few videos. It's doable in your TL , but geeze access is tight. I would try it, but I've been wrenching on my own vehicles for 40 years so I know what I can and can't do. I always tell people that want to do repairs themselves, know your abilities and don't overextend yourself, and have a plan B before you start in case something doesn't go right.Â
