I have a 2007 Ford Expedition. My daughter drives it now (or did). She drove it to work and upon leaving it will not start. It turns over but won’t start. I checked the emergency switch in the back and have taken it to my local mechanic and then Ford dealer. No codes. Neither can tell me what is wrong. Ford dealer told me it was catalytic converters and suggested I straight pipe… I did… now they won’t even take it back to diagnose saying no longer factory. Help. The dealer sounds like an idiot or a thief (or both). Unless 100% plugged up which is not likely, catalytic converters are not going to prevent the engine from starting, though if partially plugged they can certainly cause poor power and lack of acceleration. Not to mention that no legit dealer or mechanic is going to suggest straight pipes. (It's a federal crime!) I have to wonder if they did that to steal your converters to sell for the precious metals.
You would think they would check the basics, but to begin I would try to see whether you have an ignition problem or a fuel delivery problem. Spray some starting fluid into the intake and try cranking the engine. If the engine is in good condition internally it will briefly run on the starting fluid if you have spark.
Yeah, that’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard. I don’t think the mechanic could have been incompetent enough to think that would fix your problem. That was 100% a scam. The catalytic converter is part of the exhaust system (cars can run without them all together).
I agree with Chuck on checking if it’s fuel delivery. It could also be airflow or compression. Let us know what happens with the starting fluid.
