Scotty, love your channel.

I was changing the thermostat on a 2003 toy avalon. When I was putting it back on, I over tightened the nut and broke off one of the connecting bolts. Help! How do I fix?

where are the pictures?

How much of the stud is left sticking out?

none.

I cant figure out how to attach an image.

That's why I put a topic right at the top of the main page called "READ THIS FIRST"

There were 3 bolts that that thermostat slides over and then you attach a nut. I broke one over the bolts off.

Go out and get yourself a left handed drill bit. Something around half the diameter of the stud should do. Often that's enough to get it out. Use a center punch.

If that doesn't work, get a set of easy-outs/extractors. Don't get the cheap ones they're garbage.

If that doesn't work find someone with a welder and weld a nut on.

There are plenty of videos on Youtube how to do it.

The threaded fixture left is a stud.  How much of it is left?  If there is some, soak it with PB Blaster, get some Vice Grips and turn it out.  If not, try heating it up with a propane torch first.  If still not, the best way is to weld a nut to it and with a socket, back it out.

Is some of the bolt sticking out above the surface? If so you can try gripping the remains of it with vise-grips to try getting it out. Other than that you would need to use an extraction kit.

@chucktobias I don't mean to disagree but I have never found any of those bolt extractors to work unless the stud is already somewhat loose. And I've tried at least 10 to 12 different ones.

yeah if you can put the part in a drill press they're great. But working in-situ the weld method is king (as long as you have clearance). In the end it all depends on the situation which is why I ask for pics.

@mmj Correcto!

I over tightened the nut

you should be using a torque wrench on gasketted mating surfaces.

I know that now. There were 3 bolts that that thermostat slides over and then you attach a nut. I broke one over the bolts off.
