I would like to see this on new cars

To whom it may concern:

My wife has receiver several Speed Camera Violations. At $50 a pop this can add up. On new cars I think it would be useful to have a "Speed Limiter." You would set it at the desired mph or kph. Then you would press a button to engage or disengage it. No more speeding tickets. Turn it off when you get on the highway.

Here is your solution and it doesn't cost $50; slow down and obey the speed limit.

The problem with that is in an emergency situation where you have to speed up to avoid an accident you would lose time disabling the system and it might be too late.

You can have an effect similar to what you want by using cruise control set to the speed limit. Then if you need to speed up in an emergency you can do it immediately without having to stop and think about disabling a limiter. (If in heavy traffic though you'd want adaptive cruise control so as not to have to be constantly fiddling with it.)

Another possibility would be a "speed minder" like some cars had back in the 1960s. (Maybe some still do.) You'd set it for your maximum desired speed and an alarm buzzer sounds if you reach that speed.

Some cars in Europe have that speed alarm. And some navigation apps.

You are correct Chuck Tobias. Maybe the "Speed Limiter" can also be turned off by flooring the accelerator, as well as pushing a button.

A “speed limiter”? I think they call that a brain. You’re supposed to use it whenever you drive 😉

This has existed in some form or another since at least the 1990s. In my 1994 540i, I could set it to chime if I went over a set speed. I set it at 75 MPH. Fancy cars these days have heads up displays to give you visual and probably audio warnings that you are speeding. They can read speed limit signs.

No technology will compensate for people not paying attention. Not unless every mode of transport becomes automated. Lane monitoring systems were created for the same reason.

Are you in the UK? I had no idea there was such a system until my cab driver told me about it.

I think there are a few places in the U.S. that have speed cameras but they are not as common as red light cameras. Their legality is tenuous due to the right in the U.S. of a person accused of a crime to confront their accuser in open court. Of course in this case the accuser is a machine, which makes that a sporting proposition.

What is usually done with these automated enforcement schemes is a ticket is mailed out to the victim owner of the vehicle and if silently paid there are no points assigned to one's license. This cuts way down on challenges, since if you do go to court and lose your case (likely, since traffic courts tend to be rigged strict) points will be assigned, which has a domino effect on your insurance rates and even possibly your credit rating.

Your tax dollars at work!

That is a terrible idea.

I don't give two flying ducks about speeding tickets when I need to floor it in an emergency!

I think you need to reprogram your wife. Eek

That might go well..

@itwt
you can't let her find out.
Turn up the speedometer needle or something

Some modern cars have active cruise control. You set the max speed. And the car will speed up and slow down accordingly. You still have to pay attention to the road though.

There is a device on pretty much most every car nowadays, it's called cruise control. Your wife should learn how to use it and not speed.

cruise control is not particularly useful in the city (stop & go), which is where these cameras are usually installed.

You know, the navigation app I use (Waze) tells me my actual speed, and what the speed limit is. Maybe they could add a warning tone/ding option for people who want to be warned they are exceeding the limit.

Of course, it also tells you where the speed cameras and police cars are, as well as debris in the road, traffic jams, construction, etc.

Google maps does this

My Cadillac can display speed limits on the dash, I never use it. In my other car I put an aftermarket stereo with Navigation in and it can give me a voice prompt when I go over the speed limit. Again, I never use it instead I just pay attention to the speed signs.
