But before asking my question:

  • 1996 - Toyota - Starlet - Glanza S
  • 40,489.168 mi [65,161km]
  • Automatic

Requestingly asked question:

Despite taking care of my car, may I ask if this car's turbo engine will last...? forever? 

PS, I am sorry; I'm a 30 year old Male, but just peaked interest in cars this past month.

PPS, Would you happen to have any videos on the Nissan 370Z?(watched 100s of your videos; just have trillions more to go:))[whisper]: my brother just bought a nissan 370z and wants to know. (Chuckle)

Well, everything wears out eventually but you've only got 60 something thousand miles on it. It should last quite some time. Just change the engine oil and filter every 5,000 mi using full synthetic oil and it'll last as long as it can

I guess it depends on whether the existing engine is in good shape or not. The car is 26 years old so the least of your worries will be with the engine. All of the rubber parts such as torsion bar bushings and motor mounts will be drying out and deteriorating. If the engine does not burn oil then refrain from doing burnouts, baby it and it will probably keep right on chugging along. Be sure to keep up with the oil changes. Changing to a non-turbo will probably be prohibitively expensive. It would require a matching ECM and wiring harness. The parts would most likely be only available on the used market and then that brings us back to how does the existing engine run?

Also, the car has a bit black dust on the inside bottom surface of the exhaust so , might be burning a little(typing with uncertainty).
And for the engine, I was thinking of going smaller power(a bit emabrassing),since in guam, there is no need to go fast. Make the engine smaller also to try fitting an electric steering into the car rather than my slightly leaking pinion and rack steering.

I meant i do not need to go fast; I'm sure there are speed racers out here in guam:)


Definitely not worth it with that mileage, just dont abuse it and keep up with maintenance. Youre right to say a non turbo engine should outlast a turbo engine, but I wouldnt go through the hassle, especially on a car thats that old

May I switch out my turbo engine with a regular engine to make it last longer? (More like worth it kinda question) ...

Could you? Probably.
But why?
Just use the engine until it goes out - when/if it does, then it’s time to get replacement engines, etc…

At first I wanted to because of the power steering stealing energy from the engine, sounded to me like the engine is going to die faster. Then I find out it will cost me 5 grand or so... so decided not to lol....

Oh yes.. sorry .. the engine. Yes will keep the engine until needed to be replaced; therefore wanting to prepare... maybe a toyota v6 engine a good replacement?

It's already lasted a lot longer than would be expected. Just drive it until it drops.

You can keep a car running practically forever if you have a mind to but it can involve a lot more time, money, and effort than most people would want to put into it. (As an extreme example look at the 1950s U.S. cars in Cuba.)
