Instrument Cluster Light Illumination Issue

Topic starter

The top light in the speedometer of my 1999 Ranger rarely comes on with the headlight switch, while the rest of the cluster's lights work just fine. Every once in a while when it's cold, like in the mid to low 20s cold, the center light will come on as if nothing is wrong, and stay on. Bumps don't seem to make it turn on and off, like a loose bulb or bad filament would do when you hit them. What would be causing the light to do this? It's more of an annoyance than a safety issue, as I can still read the speedometer from the remaining lights.

You should really pull the instrument cluster and replace ALL the illumination bulbs.  Also check the rheostat dimmer switch that controls the brightness.  Check also for corrosion of the bulb sockets.
