I want to purchase my own oil and oil filter and bring them to the repair shop to have them done the oil change? Will I inknowingly offend them by doing so? Have never done it but I do want to add the best stuff in my new Camry.
I don’t want them to think “this dude think we can’t do our job???”
It depends on the shop. Some won't allow outside sourced parts for liability reasons. I had a local place replace the rear main brake line in my truck a few months ago. I provided the line and brake fluid. They told me they can use the materials provided, but couldn't guarantee anything but that their actual work was done correctly, if materials fail. I had no issues. You might just tell them the oil brand and filter you want them to use.
Depends on the shop, as was already stated. My mechanic lets me bring any part or fluid in and he installs/uses them, but he only guarantees his work so if there is an issue with the part it’s on me to get all that sorted out - and then I have to pay again for him to install a new one. Whereas if he bought the part himself and there was an issue it would be all on him but at least he would resolve it without me doing anything - something to think about.
Offend? Man, it's your car haha. Their profession is to service YOUR CAR. If they don't like it they can turn the job down. Anyone who gets feelings involved is a baby.
Ask them before doing it, some won't care and others will.
They won't like you because they can't mark up everything when you bring your own parts. If this is the case, find another mechanic who will work WITH you, not against you.
I tell customers if they want to bring their own oil, filter, etc. go ahead, but realize there is no discount. It doesn't make business sense for me to put a tech on a job that loses money, such as just charging a customer for oil change labor.
I have only run into this a few times. I always offer to buy whatever oil they want to use, of course, but you have these "customers" who think they know best and that everyone is out to get them somehow.
I usually direct those down the street to the Jiffy Lube.
In short
Private mechanic shop won't do it and make excuses like it against there store policy
But privately owned mechanic shop which is not run by corporations will do it for but will charge you but will charge you for labour. But even then some of them will make excuses like this oil is bad for you or some will waste it. So yeah..
The third option left is just do it by yourself. Trust me changing oil looks hard and dirty job but really is not. First attempt your make mistake so learn from them. But in second one you should be fine. If I am correct shouldn't take you more than 30 mins max.
