Is revving your car before shutting it off a good habit or bad advice?

While I was learning to drive, my parents taught me to press the gas pedal a small amount and release it when turning off my car. They noted that this trick "burns whatever residue is left in the engine so it doesn't sit there" and what not. My parents never owned a sports car and have never told me where they got this advice, they just follow it.

Is what my parents taught me a good idea or something that could be damaging my car's engine over time? Thanks.

In the case of carburetor cars, that method leaves some fuel in the engine so for the next start, the engine can start better. Consider it as a help in addition to choke. But nowadays, cars have fuel injectors and controlled by computer, so you do not need to do that anymore.

That’s not really a good idea you don’t want to shut a car off when it’s off of idle it’s not good for it. And as said above with fuel injection vehicles there is nothing to gain from doing it. If anything it adds more fuel to an engine as it’s shitting off which is not good for it

The main reason for revving up the car before shutting it off was to get pressurized oil to the top of the engine so it would remain lubricated before the next start up.
