Hey all!!!

My wife and I are expecting another child come December and we need a bigger vehicle (minivan). We are looking to purchase a Mazda 5. From the looks of it, it has a great amount of space and with the few we have looked at doesn't break the bank either. Is there any issues that we should know about and would anyone here recommend the Mazda 5?? (We are looking at a 2015 and a 2017 model. The 2015 has 101000 kms and the 2017 has 76 000kms) Any help would be great!

Thanks!!! 😃

Yes it’s a great minivan 🙂

The weak spot is usually the transmission, and you should avoid the AW6A-EL (these tend to fail at about 200,000km, that transmission model has been terrorizing Volvo owners for about two decades)

personally am not sure on the reliability of the 5 speed automatic - people have been complaining about them online but I’m not sure how common are issues with them.

try to find one with a Mazda with both a Skyactiv-G 2.0L engine and SkyDrive 6 automatic transmission instead, these are probably the best ones.

but if you can’t, all models will probably last you over 200,000km while the best speced models can go upwards of 300,000km if they’re maintained properly (transmission oil every 50k km and engine oil every 7.5-10k km)

Just get a Sienna (if you can find a decent one within your budget)..

It’s a shame toyota didn’t offer the 7 seater Prius+ in the US.

It was kind of always the cheapest and most reliable way to get a minivan.
And it’s unfortunate they don’t offer the Toyota INNOVA either… that one blows any modern minivan out of the water

True, but I think they’re both ‘too small’ for the US market.. The Innova is CR-V sized, which itself is small by US standards. Supremely comfortable though, since it’s a body on frame construction & indestructible.
