deeply tempted to buy this 1994 chevy astro van as my daily driver. https://philadelphia.craigslist.org/ctd/d/downingtown-1994-chevrolet-astro-van/7314105653.html

is buying this old of a car as a city daily driver as stupid as it seems?

It's got low mileage, and it's in great condition. I can understand why you're tempted.

But $4K is way too much money for 27yo vehicle. I paid $4.5k for a 7yo one with AWD.

(no suprise there. It's a dealer)

Keep in mind it will need lots of work. All that aging plastic will be brittle and cracking. I would be hesitant to rely on it as my only vehicle. Check the bottom of the body for rust. If you can haggle the price way down, make sure you test drive and have it inspected by a mechanic.

If rust doesn't eat it first, the powertrains on those things can go half a million miles and more.

You can daily drive anything as long as your boss doesn’t care if you make it in to work every day. 😉

Don't let the age of a vehicle scare you off. What's important is the overall condition.

I just bought a 1995 Oldsmobile Silouette mini van for $1800/ Low miles, perfect interior, full leather ,7 captains chairs, power drivers seat and sliding door. 3.8 V 6 engine. Runs fine with no issues. Will it at some time need repair? Sure, all vehicles will.Brand new ones fail sooner or later.

If you like it, buy it. It's your money. Just know that you will have to be able to fix or upgrade it as you go along.

In the meantime, you can haul a bunch of stuff in it!

Try getting a sheet of plywood in your Rav 4 or your Corolla!

Hmmmmm I can't get my golf clubs in my Camry!

Have a good one!

Hahaha.  At least you realize the risk.

This looks like it's begging for a wild paint job.  A howling wolf under a full moon.

It cleaned up really nicely. Pearls on a pig?  I bet Scotty will pick this one apart.  90s Chevy as a daily driver.  I hope he answers on camera for you! I want to hear it too!

No, it is definitely not irresponsible. Insisting on driving an unsafe and unroadworthy vehicle would be irresponsible. Those Astros were tough vans back in their day.

It's not a good idea. A lot of parts will need replacing due to age alone. I wouldn't attempt to daily drive something that old.

Ugh. Look at the crappy tech on that van. It will also need tons of work all over to it since its 27 years old. Are you going to work with this van? Is it your dream van? There are many better options than this old thing.

"tech" is exactly what you DON'T want in a work van.

@mountainmanjoe He said "Daily city driver" and I guess he would need some good tech to get around the city each and every day.

like what?

like navigation and apple car play

lol millennials. You can't even imagine a world without gadgets can you?

I'm not a millenial, dude I m a gen Z.

Irrelevant. Before navigation, I knew my city. If you gave me a location, I instantly knew how to get there, and I could never get lost. We also had printed map books (which I still keep in the car). I don't consider itunes a necessity for transportation. This van has a radio and tape deck, and nearly everyone has navigation on their phone these days.

If you think I love technology, you should see my friend. He gets a new macbook every two years and his dad trades in his lexus and bmw's every 3 years because they always want the most updated safety features and technology. I'm pretty behind on tech compared to people in my school.
