I just read that speedometer fraud is up 13%...a lot in California but I creeping all over. Seems lax enforcement issues and better covering it up. I would like to see a post on this in questions. Buyers should be reminded weekly on pitfalls of purchasing cars from shady title jumpers, flippers, dealers, I try to advise buy vehicles from private owners, get history, run search, title must be in sellers name, ideally owned for 2 years or more. I see a lot of questions from people who have cars with (low miles) having high mile issues.
Speedometer or odometer?
At least with two year ownership it rules out mystery in most cases
Some kind of fraud will always be attempted as some will find a way to do so but i think in the future it will be near impossible to alter any odometer reading on newer cars as software updates and other info will be downloaded thru the wireless connection. Any changes that seem unlikely would be tagged on that vehicle easily and reported to its vehicle history report. It's entirely possible because of those violations...unless its safety related no more updates can be accessed...
Old school I always referred to speedo fraud. I corrected it not sure you be sent to prison for speedometer fraud. Lol
Yeah, both(well, not all), dealers and private owners like to cheat anywhere they can, not only on odometres.
Yes, I agree the technology may deter amateurs, but when dealing with 100k vehicles the crooks will win. Look at the key unlock software used to steal several new cars from dealership. You can still wash titles thru other states, I called on a 14k car on marketplace, real value should have been 18k.seller said salvage title but it was just a broken windshield. I said they don't total a 2017 Prius with 32k miles for a broken windshield. Lot of crooks.
