Knocking noise in firewall

Topic starter

02 Ram Van 2500 with a 5.9 and 111k miles.

After hyrdroplaning into the guardrail on i70, front impact on bumper, I have a strange intermittent knocking/clicking noise coming from the firewall under the dash drivers side, that goes faster when I hit the accelerator.

It comes and goes, usually starts after it warms up. Happens on idle, goes away, happens while driving, goes away, comes back, goes away.

Midas couldnt tell me what it is and no one seems to know. Any help is appreciated.

its coming from in the firewall.

the firewall is just a thin sheet of metal. There's nothing inside it. The noise is coming either from the engine bay or the cabin. If it's in the cabin then it could be an HVAC actuator thrown out of alignment by the impact.

trying pulling the HVAC fuse and see if it goes away

There's not much under the dashboard that will make mechanical sounds. It sounds like a flap trying to go into position and failing, as @imperator says possibly misaligned due to the accident. (I think a fan noise would sound faster.) You're  going to have to tear into the dashboard.

You can find a repair manual here which may help:

Midas couldnt tell me what it

That's no surprise. Why would you go to a chain shop like Midas? Those joints are not exactly known for performing thorough diagnostics and are very prone to ripping people off.

no one seems to know.

Who else have you gone to? Are you sure it isn't actually coming from the engine compartment? (Noises can telegraph all over a vehicle.) If you cannot find the noise yourself you need to find a good independent mechanic who will diagnose it for you.

If possible post a video demonstrating the noise.

@chucktobias because i know people there. The noise isnt coming from the engine, its coming from in the firewall.
We used a stethoscope with a tube to narrow down the location. Its been doing this for a couple of months, the truck runs fine

That was your mistake. Chain shops are NEVER to be trusted with any vehicle, especially with diagnostic work. Take that vehicle to an independent mechanic. Information about finding an independent mechanic can be found in the site FAQ.
