Low power problem

I have a 1997 Ford Ranger 2.3L 2wd 5spd with 261294 miles on it. I am constantly having to down shift on relatively low grade incline hills to maintain speed. Sometimes having to down shift to 2nd gear just to make it up the hill. I don't have the money to rebuild or replace the engine. So my question is;  Is there something I can do to increase power so I don't have to down shift so much on low grade incline hills?

Well, what kind of general maintenance have you done to it? With those miles it could be any number of things.

It could be spark plugs, could be a clogged fuel filter, could be your fuel pump is starting to go out. I would start small and cheap first. Pull your spark plugs and take a look at them. See if there's a lot of black carbon build up on them or not. Also check the fuel filter. A clogged filter can really cause significant loss of power. Heck, may as well check the air filter too.

I'd start there as those are free to very, very cheap things to correct. If you're still having problems, come back and let us know so we can give you more advice on it. And if you get it fixed please let us know too. Good luck!

You could try a fuel/intake system cleaning.
