Hi guys I am thinking to swap a ls1 into my car. I am looking for a used with about 70kmiles. Is there anything I should be worried about?
I know just the guy: @Mod_Man
@DayWalker Thank you sir. 🙂
What are you thinking about putting it in? The application is important to determine what LS motor will work best for you.
As for issues, they are some of the most reliable motors out there. That's why so many hot rod guys use them and I have installed tons. If I had to name downsides to the LS1, it would be that it is old technology and as they age basically all LS motors will burn a little oil. That's really the largest downside but oil is cheap.
If you know for sure the LS1 motor is the best for you, I would say go for it. One thing I would do is upgrade the pushrods to hardened chromoly rods as that will give you extra strength for running more power. It isn't a large expense and you can install them yourself. No tune or anything required.
Thank you so much.
You're welcome
I am just asking about general problems with that engine LS1.
LS1 engines (in stock form) are one of the most reliable engines to come from GM in the last few decades and can easily last 200,000+ miles as long as you are on top of the maintenance. They are NA pushrod V8’s with port injection-only and no variable valve timing or cylinder deactivation or other technological doodads. And they are popular engine swaps in general. That being said, the engine you are putting in is at 70,000 miles so not sure what kind of life it might have had or which vehicle (and MY) it came from - so hard to say how long it can last or issues that can crop up (due to the previous life it had - city miles, highway miles, drag strip?). Also, do you plan on modifying the engine? Mod_Man can fill you in on that.
@Mod_Man can hook you up with LS1 engines. It's very hard to tell that if the owner maintained the engine well.
Thank you for the mention. 🙂
Your welcome @Mod_Man. Your pretty much a good addition for knowing these types of engines that most people don't like me.
Thanks my friend. I appreciate it and it's good to know I'm making positive contributions that are helpful.
Your welcome. I'm glad you're here and so is everyone else.
The LS platform has been a very popular engine series going for a very long time. If you watch any of the "car" shows you'll notice they like to use LS platform engines into their builds because of the reliability. Any used engine has risks because you don't know the history of it. You don't mention what car you're wanting to drop it in. Went to a cars-n-coffee a few years ago and someone had put a LS1 into an older Miata. So if there's a will there's a way 👍
I was actually going to put it in my miata. Thanks for the info.
