So lately I’ve been looking into buying a new truck (preferably 4x4). My budget is around 30k. I prefer a good v8 engine in a full-size or a 6 cylinder in a midsize. A 16 tundra near me is a 1 owner with 102k miles that was maintained every 5000 miles according to the CARFAX . Would you fee safe buying that over an f150 5.0 or Chevy 5.3 with 60-70k miles? Thanks to any answers out there! Plan on driving it until the wheels fall off. I’ve also considered Titans. Some newer with 30-40k miles around me in my budget with 4x4.
If a mechanic checks out the Tundra, and gives you the green light, I say go ahead. It’ll outlast all the other trucks on your shortlist..
100,000 miles is nothing for a Toyota product!
Price depends on location, but bargain hard.
Good luck!
Thank you so much. That’s how I feel. I’m my own man but no one in my family agrees with me. It’s my money and I don’t mind breaking the “4th wall.” They are all perfectly happy taking their domestics in with issues. If not a tundra there’s a certified preowned titan near me with 40k miles top of the line interior
No worries. If you don’t plan to towing a lot, the tundra should be perfectly fine. If you do tow a lot though, you may be better off with a 2500/F250. Anyway, here’s Scotty’s opinion on the modern Tundra -
Ehh The most I may tow is a my lawn mower trailer, a boat and maybe a car on a dolly/trailer. I had a 6 cylinder Mitsubishi raider. It towed what I need but didn’t hold up long once I started working out of it and towing (3.7 liter). Any modern v8 should do the job for me I just want something that’d last. Tundra in my research seem to be the most fuel inefficient but it’s a truck. They all drink gas. I’d rather pay more in gas than big repairs
Yeah sounds like the Tundra suits your needs. You’re right, none of the big trucks will return any respectable fuel economy. It’s not part of their job description.
Oh & skip the Titan, if you’re looking for a keeper.
Here is some points:
Take the Tundra to a pre-purchase inspection, if it passes with flying colors, buy it!
If not, look into a 2011-2014 Ford F-150 with the 5.0 V8, those are good but not as legendary as the Tundra's reliability.
Forget the Chevy.
Nissan Titans are alright but not great and to be honest just get the Tundra those things can last 3 4 times what you put.
I like the Ford 5.0s. They seem reliable and doesn’t have a turbo that may fail. Tundra resell value with 200k miles seems about the same. I drive less than 10k miles a year and get everything checked in my vehicles before or pretty much on time. My beater truck died on me Tundras and fords have always been my favorites. Love the Rams look but always hear about the issues lol
Hmm, the 5.0 for the F-150 in the 2011-2014 model years is probably the best for the F-150.
My personal opinion would be to get the Tundra if you can get a good deal and its in good mechanical shape, and the F-150 otherwise and make sures thats in good shape as well.
In the real world, Tundra resale value especially with higher mileage is much higher than Ford resale value. Here in California 15-20 year Tundras with 150-200k miles go for around $12000-15000 while Fords aren't half of that.
I also like the look of the modern F-150s better but they it just doesn't feel as bulletproof and rugged as the Tundra (when it comes to looks and quality). But I also am always biast towards a Toyota whenever I can be;)
To me, there is really 2 options: either a Tundra or a 2011-2017 Ford F-150 with the 5.0L (6.2L is OK too but stick to 5.0L for better fuel economy), with 2013/2014 being the sweet spot. Since you don’t tow very heavy and want something that will last, I would just get a Tundra - the one you mentioned above seems like it has a good service history. Still have an independent, honest mechanic check it out before you buy.
