Mazda 3 Radiator Fan only comes on with AC

Hi.

I have a 2009 Mazda 3 BL (2010 in USA)

2.0 liter, Manual, 95000kms

I've noticed the radiator fan does not come on. On a hot day, idling for long periods of time it will not come on. There isnt a temp gauge in this car so only the idiot lights but I don't get any overheating light. I checked the temperature using OBD gauge and it reaches to 110c and the fan doesnt come on. I think that is too high.

BUT the fan does come on when I put the AC on. So i dont think its the fan module that people say normally goes bad on these.

I also have the Forscan tool and successfully tested that the fan controller works. What else could I check or do ?

Regards,

Check the coolant temperature sensor.

If the car recognizes the temperature on OBDII, then the sensor must be working.

My Sentra does the same, but never overheats.
You can get one of those thermometer guns to check the temp of the radiator and engine to be sure.

The coolant temp sensor is fine. No trouble codes and when I disconnect it there is no temp reading and fans go full speed.

Maybe that's how it's supposed to be? looking online at old Ford gauge clusters, the red over-heating zone is at about ±120 Celsius.
That being said, both my Ford products made during that area usually idle MUCH cooler 1.6L at 90 (the gauge goes from 60 to 120) and the 2.0L at 70...

It doesnt seem right. The thermostat is fully open, and when driving and air going through radiator, or if the AC is on, the max temp it reaches is 85c. But going upto 120c when not moving seems excessive. Even on a 40c day here I've not ever seen the radiator fan come in.

Are you telling me that this mazda is designed so well that it doesnt need the radiator fan to ever come on ?
