Mazda 3 vs Honda Civic

Hello there!

I've been looking for a car for my brother. The cars he is more prone to choose among are two hatchbacks. We are not talking about a specific car but to compare the two models and choose from there.

The first option would be a Mazda 3 5p skyactiv-g 2.0 165 cv and the second the Honda Civic 5p 1.8 140cv i-vtec.

We are searching for a reliable car,  preferentially with a naturally aspirated fuel motor and with quite a zippy potential.

Which one would you choose? Is there anything we should consider?

The manual Honda Civic will outlast Mazda.

What years are you thinking about? Mazda became much better after 2014. Most people will say Honda due to their reputation. As for newer models I see the two brands very close to each other in reliability. I would choose the Mazda, as they are much more enjoyable to drive

How long does he plan to keep the vehicle and how many miles does he hope to put on it?  If the goal is to keep for as long as possible with as much mileage as possible, in general the Honda Civic (naturally aspirated with a manual) has a better chance.  They are pretty zippy as it is.

Which years and generation are you looking at?  See here for years to avoid (or at least be aware of the issues if you get that model year) on our Toyota/Honda Common problems sticky:

The Honda Civic with a naturally aspirated engine would last the longest, but the Mazda 3 isn't bad either.

I like Mazda 3 more it still has a automatic transmission and the civic has a cvt, I don't like the idea of a belt in my transaxle so I avoid cvt transmissions

Honda Civics are reliable cars while the Mazda 3 is very fun to drive with a manual transmission.

manual honda last forever tbh just slap on a cold air intake and its fun to drive for cheap

Hi! Thanks for each response,

I would like to keep it as much as possible.

The models from Mazda range from 2015 to 2017 and the Civic are all models from 2015. And each of them equip a manual transmission.

Thanks!

Obviously have both checked out mechanically and if given a clean bill of health on both, him test drive both and let him decide which he likes better. All things being equal, I'd pick the Honda.

Generically speaking, I prefer the Civic over the 3.

aesthetically, with the latest generation of each, I prefer the Mazda over the Honda.
