Need to pass emissions on 2002 Lexus RX300 with 171K miles. Check engine light(s) are on. Can't pass emissions in Texas. Different mechanics give different answers. All take money but only to have same problem remain.

Last mechanic with 5 star ratings from over 300 customers, swore if he replaced oxygen sensor, all would be well. After he replaced, said oops, new light comes on. Now need you to have us go in and see if knock sensor is out or if a cable is loose near it.

Auto parts store check had shown knock sensor check engine light bank 1 sensor 1 coming on, but certified mechanic said it was not on and that autoparts store don't know what they are doing. Now he says it's on "intermittently".

Previous mechanic with 5 star rating of over 200 customers, had catalytic converters replaced on cyl 1,3 & 5 coils. replaced spark plugs, valve cover gaskets, plenum gasket, mass air flow meter, and also did a tune up. check engine light went off for 5 miles, then back on. Sometimes notice rpm is running much higher if I drive for more than an hour.

I need to pass emissions and have car trustworthy for driving again.

First off, did the first mechanic put the old O2 sensor back in? I would also question what type he used, as toyotas and Lexus like the oem densos. Catalytic converters replaced on certain cylinders, I admit that I don't even know what that means.

What are the codes you got?

The code that's left is P0325 bank #1 Sensor #1. I talked to another mechanic yesterday and he said he would only put oem knock sensors and would have to do both, because the labor is already covered in one. made no sense to do only one sensor, since the other one would likely go out soon. Cost would be additional $1300 . Currently in the hole over $3000.

If one of the mechanics said he replaced Catalytic converters on cylinders 1,3 and 5 he probably meant on that bank he changed that one converter as car may have 1 for each bank. Always ask your mechanics that you want to see ALLLLLLLLLLl the old parts they replace just to keep the dirty bastards honest!
