New 2022 Corolla oil change question

Topic starter

Just bought a new 2022 Corolla LE. The dealership says to do the oil changes at 10,000 miles. (The car has full synthetic oil in it)  Being an old guy, I'm used to changing oil at 3000 miles, any thoughts on this? This seems like a lot of miles between oil changes. Thanks,

If you want it to last change oil and filter at 5000 mile intervals.

The 10,000 miles oil change is done under warranty for free. If you ask them to change it at 5k miles and tell them you pay for it, they probably do it.

To give the engine the best chance at lasting longer and peace of mind, I would stick to changing both oil and filter every 5,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first.  Every 10,000 miles is too long between changes.

The dealership is either ignorant, lazy or actively misleading you. If you dig into the definitional terms a bit, the 10K advice is for what is wrongly called "normal conditions." What are such "normal conditions?" Long distance highway driving in temperate climates.

"Severe" conditions are defined as one or more of the following: Lots of stop-and-go short distance driving, or significant time idling in traffic, or frequently operating the vehicle in weather that is either below freezing or above 90 degrees, or driving on gravel or dirt roads.

Arguably, so-called "severe" conditions are "normal" for most folks, given that only one of those boxes has to be checked, so-to-speak, to qualify as operating "severe conditions."

Occassionally, Toyota offers up language that is misleading (and this is the case, here. Another example is the dealer telling you that Toyota transmissions don't have a filter, but a screen. There's no functional difference. The screen functions as a filter).

The other thing to look for is time. As Chuck says, don't go longer than six months, if you're not piling up the miles.

Chuck didn't say that. And once a year is fine.

That's true, about Chuck. My apologies to him. However, I disagree (and many others disagree) with the one year interval, because of the "severe service" schedule that many cars should de facto operate on. As I said in a prior reply, your prescription for a year is an outlier, not the current consensus. For example, consider what thecarcarenut has to say (among many others). So we will have to agree to disagree on this issue MMJoe:

Scotty and most people here say 1yr so you're the outlier.

MMJoe, as you know, I like to use evidence-based arguments. Follow the link to see the "severe schedule" (and the conditions for an oil change) from the Toyota site, directly. While it's true they don't mention time, my research indicates that time is a missing variable that needs to be accounted for.

Your argument was in your exact words "consensus". Which you don't have.
I went to your link and it said "Replace Engine Oil And Oil Filter" @ 10,000 miles.
Nothing else.

That's interesting, because I downloaded the PDF severe service schedule from that page (there's a link that says "Download PDF" and it clearly lays out the conditions for 5K oil changes). I probably should have mentioned that. (The site does not create an external link, just a download option).

@geriscan
Yes I downloaded the maintenance schedule PDF under "recommended maintenance". 10k miles. Absolutely no mention of 6 months.
