New Car preference.

I'm in the need of a new car. Currently looking at the 2023 civic, corolla, and camry. I'm curious if it's better to avoid the cvt transmissions for a long term outlook. The Camry has a noncvt automatic or am I better off going with a standard transmission for any of the listed models? Or is there no real difference in longevity with the newest cvt from Honda and Toyota?

My personal preference is Civic, Camry, Corolla.

But my recommendation would be Camry, Civic, Corolla.

I just like Honda’s overall design choices better than Toyota’s.

If you don't want cvt then your only option is the Camry. If you want standard transmission the Civic has one or two trims from the hatchback model that offers manual transmission. But for a daily driver automatic is easier in my opinion and if you plan on keeping it for a long time then Camry. Otherwise you'll be fine with any of them (just avoid turbo versions) and see which one you like best.

I would not eliminate CVT altogether, I just would only buy a toyota made CVT.

When the 2004 prius came out, it was using what is a typical CVT transmission with a belt. Those things were tanks, even with all the hybrid tech in them, they typically lasted a very long time. Cab companies would buy them and drive them like crazy, and still get many hundreds of thousands of miles out of them. The newer Toyota CVT doesn't use a belt any more, and they are still overall very reliable.

I would not be afraid of buying a brand new Toyota with a cvt, because I know I will take care of it.

If I were looking at a nissan Rogue, I know the cvt is by far the weakest point on the car. That is not the case with Toyota.

My friend has a prius from like 2006 with a bazillion miles on it, and a couple of years ago the battery finally died, cvt still trucking. Amazingly, when I look up user reviews for the 2006 prius on edmunds, it scores a 4.9! That is the highest I have ever seen on a car, and especially one that old.

Again, I would only buy a car that had a cvt, if it were toyota.
