New electric mail trucks

Scotty,

Thanks first of all for helping me find my 2011 Toyota Camry. It's tops!

My question is what do you think of this (Solyndra-type?) of switching over to an entire nationwide fleet of new electric mail trucks? I spoke to my post office pal who says that the old trucks break down a lot.

What do you think about electric for this application and if electric's no good, what would you generally suggest our super-competent guys in Washington DC do about a new fleet of mail wagons, now that it's too late?

Thanks,

I know it’s just a proposal but a fleet of all-electric mail trucks - if it became reality I guess I won’t be receiving my mail as often.  I think it’s a silly idea;  EVs still cannot compete with ICE.  And it’s still not clear which technology will win out in the end (EV, solid state, hybrid, hydrogen fuel cell, something else).

Generally speaking, EV for local shorter distance routes make sense, IMHO. Especially where the start and end point will be the same.

One of the biggest challenges is battery capacity. But if the truck is only going local routes and the charging infrastructure is at the station, it may make sense.

With that said, what doesn’t make sense is mail itself. We live in an ever digital world. Sure there are parcels. But it seems FedEx and UPS fit better than the USPS in that regard.

What also bugs me is the fact it is a one of a kind vehicle. One would think that going with a high production EV maker, rather than a one off, would yield cost savings.

Hey, look you we are talking about. A pseudo government organization. Forget I said anything about savings.

And lastly.  Could they design anything uglier?

Once again, our tax dollars down the El Bano.

it's very simple. Somebody in government gets a handsome reward from Oskosh. Nothing new there.

Local delivery is one of the few areas where electric vehicles could actually work out. It's not a new idea, in fact there was a laundry in Dublin, Ireland that used them successfully decades ago. (The laundry was founded in 1912, well before the ancient symbol for good luck the company took its name and logo from acquired a much darker meaning. However I won't post a photo of their electric vans here in case anyone would be easily offended, follow the link if interested.)
