[Solved] New Infintiy Q60 Blown Engine!

Asking for a friend...no really! My friend has an almost new 2019 Infinity Q60 with 30k miles on it. I guess they got their first oil change at the Infinity dealer, and they did not reset the milage warning for the next oil change so it never came on. She continued to drive the next 27,000 miles with no oil change and last week it blew a rod. Now the dealer wants $16,500 for a new engine. Should the dealer be at fault here? I also understand how could anyone just keep driving without thinking, "hmmm it's been a long time since I got an oil change"! Thoughts or suggestions appreciated!!

doubt there is any possibility of warranty the dealer can only do so much it’s the owners responsibility to maintain the car and to “read the manual” not that anyone actually does

That is unfortunate, sorry to hear that happened. Almost always, the dealer also installs a sticker on the upper left portion of the windshield that says what mileage the next oil change is due at. I would think that if this sticker was placed on your friend's car, the dealer will point that out any say the owner should have brought in the car at that mileage. Because of this, I don't think she will be successful in arguing that it's the dealer's fault the motor blew. Yes, the dealer should have reset the maintenance light but they always put the sticker on as backup since you cannot solely trust the electronics. Good luck to your friend!

That's a good question, I would assume they would have, but I will ask. Not that I think that would make a difference. I would still think even if a warning light did not come on, or there was no sticker, I would think "gee, it's been how long since I had an oil change"? I'm hyper-vigilant about oil changes. Probably why my Lexus RX300 has 240k on it and burns no oil!

On the maintenence book - Do it yourself section: 8.10

Says:

Oil level should be checked regularly.
Operating the engine with an insufficient amount of oil can damage the
engine, and such damage is not covered
by warranty.

THAT reminds me I'd better check my wifes car for oil.....

My wife blew up two cars. Twice within a year, the overheat light came on and she just kept driving! {black}

My wife total one car on black ice...but she knows about the oil lite...especially when it goes ON when she speeds around curves....Well what can i say..sometimes its our lot in life...can't be helped.

There's a reason they call warning lights "idiot lights".

Most people don't know how to open the hood on their vehicle. So they don't check anything. Or check tire pressure or even look at them.

Then they want to blame everyone else for their neglect.

I blew one of my engines back in 2012 by ignoring the Low Engine Oil light.  At the end of the day, it is up to the driver/owner to make sure they are on top of their maintenance.  I am very sorry to hear this, but the dealer is not at fault here.

All on your friend. Not the dealer's fault for driving ridiculous amount with no oil change...
