A couple orders a new RAV4 from their local dealership. The RAV4 arrives weeks later and they pick up their new vehicle.. take in home all happy and giddy. The very next day the SUV stalls out on them leaving them sitting in the middle of a highway. They got a little upset, contacted the dealership immediately and the RAV4 was left there as my friends pressured the dealership for a NEW RAV4. They waited 2.5 months to get their car and it died within 24 hrs of delivery. I recommended the RAV4 purchase initially, as the wife wanted my opinion.
Today, I bumped into my friend. I asked her what happened. Did they order her a new one?? lol
She said, "No, I drive it ever day.." and I quote:
"Nothing was wrong it. It was my husband's driving. The car's computer was confused by getting both braking and acceleration signals. He has to learn not to drive with 2 feet."
Can an old driving habit make a new RAV4 stall???
It wouldn't surprise me.
Maybe it's to stop those people who jam on the accelerator when they intend to brake, and jump their car on top of another one, or run their car through a store front.

That’s unlikely!
On pretty much all gearboxes, as soon as you touch the brake it disables the TCC - and the engine becomes loosely coupled to the wheels.
(I’ve tried it on my Kia SUV with a similar gearbox and it did not stall or anything - just felt weird)
I think the dealer is just lying.
(PS. Please advise to to get rid of this habit - it wears out the TCC clutch and the brakes)
Why shut the car off?
to stop those people who jam on the accelerator when they intend to brake
maybe you misunderstood my earlier answer. I'm talking about loss of life. Nobody takes idiot lights seriously. Especially in the moment.
Quite possibly. Everything is electronically controlled these days, and if it is getting an acceleration and brake signal at the same time, it might confuse the computer.
it's definitely not confused. It knows exactly what it's doing, and what you're doing.
It wouldn't surprise me.
So would be in agreement then.. Surprised as I was by her explanation, I somehow believed her.. With ECUs controlling everything about a vehicle.. I dunno.
My bud bought his wife the RAV4. He's been retired after 30 yrs w/Southern Bell.. lineman.
Seems more logical car should just trip a code & an idiot light if you're using 2 pedals. Why shut the car off?
I think the dealer is just lying.
Maybe so...
Another friend had this exact same issue with his wife's new RAV4 3 months ago. She got stranded twice in the same day. Husband took vehicle back to dealership(same dealership) and instructed them to order his wife a new RAV4. They did, new one hasn't had any problems.
Might this be a larger problem/issue for Toyota? .. it's a remarkable coincidence!
That's definitely interesting.
If it's a common issue, I guess we'll see either more complaints or a TSB from Toyota.
Toyota did have fuel pump issues on 3.36 MILLION cars in the US alone ( https://www.carscoops.com/2022/09/toyota-reaches-150-million-settlement-over-fuel-pump-recall/) - maybe this issue also affected 2022-2023 cars and they/we do not know about it yet.

Yeah, I misunderstood you @mmj
