Non profit use van question

I've been volunteering for a local no kill pet rescue in my area for over 17.5 years now and I recently got a 1993 Chrysler Town And Country mini van to use for my volunteering work. I only paid $500 for it but it has a problem with the transmission. I most notice (but far from limited to, if need more information please ask) it when going from reverse to overdrive (has no regular drive gear, only OD, 3, & L for forward gears). It takes it a while to catch & most of the time I have 2 press the gas lightly a bit before will go into gear. I did have the fluid and filter changed on the transmission as well as an additive put in to see if that would help & if anything it made it worse! I've checked into getting a new transmission put in as far as availability but all I could find was reman. Transmissions. My question is would it be worth putting in a reman. Transmission & if so how much is 2 much $? I'm about as car savvy as a rock so I'm in desperate need of help please! I do A LOT of running all over the area for the rescue in my vehicles & it's by FAR the majority of the miles I drive. TIA.

The vehicle is twenty-eight years old. Future parts might be hard to come by.

At the very least, have an older, experienced mechanic (50 plus) who has worked or trained on early 90s vehicles to perform a general inspection. They will look at potential emerging problems and advise you on whether other issues will soon arise. That takes data, an inspection and some cost/benefit analysis.

No, I don't think it's worth it. You can ask for a quote and see for yourself, but I think the bill will be more than the car is worth.
