Northern Canada - Winter driving

Hi Scotty,

I am looking to get a new suv soon. I need a higher car (suv or trucks usually) for winter driving and driving over snowdrifts, etc. What do you consider the best vehicle for an average $ to buy for winter conditions where I live?

Thank you!

A lot of Northern Canada seems fairly remote.  So I would go with whatever has the best dealer in your area, which means you may choose differently than in Southern Canada or the US.  But off the top of my head, some good options are...

  • Small: Subaru Crosstrek
  • Mid size: Subaru Outback, Toyota Rav 4
  • Large: 4Runner, Honda Passport
  • Half-ton: (hard call... do your homework) GMC Yukon 3L Duramax, Toyota Sequoia
  • Not an SUV: Ram 2500 (Cummins)

Driving over snowdrifts? Could you elaborate, because when I think of snow drifts where I am, upstate new york, they can be pretty big.

It was common to see 3 foot snowdrifts, and those were just average size.

My default suggestion when people talk about getting through bad areas is the 4Runner as @dad2lm2 suggested. My GX470 is basically the same size, and very similar to the 4th gen 4Runner, and there isn't much I can't go through in the winter.

What size and budget are you thinking?
