[Solved] OBD2 to OBD3?

I'm considering purchasing the Autel MK808 (2021 update). I don't want to drop $500 only to have it be unable to work on new cars in maybe 3 or 4 years. So, how much longer do you think it will be before OBD3 is implemented? I'm probably just over analyzing my purchase but still I'm curious what you think. Thanks!

I have to mention this before you buy that tool (Autel MK808):

Of the TABLET style Autel tools, only the following are North American models:  (I got this list recently via email from Autel North America and I only asked them about tablets):

-MX808  (this is the one you want!)
-MX808TS
-TS608
-MS906BT
-MS906TS
-MS908 (includes the P, S, and S Pro)
-Elite
-MS909
-MS919
-Ultra
-IM508
-IM608

They also said anything that is MP or MK is not a US tool.  In addition, any of the above tablets sold by an UNauthorized dealer will NOT receive technical support/repair/warranty by Autel US.  So if a battery fails and needs replacing you are on your own and/or you have to send the unit overseas (most likely China) sometimes are your expense - which will be a hassle.  Also you risk getting a faulty unit from an unauthorized dealer - it might work a few months but then fail and then you are stuck after having spent hard earned money on a nice scan tool.  I’ve heard those stories.  BTW, Amazon is NOT an authorized Autel dealer.

For the list of authorized dealers see here:

If you want to see if your vehicle(s) is covered go here:  (select the tool you are interested in)

I’ve bought my Autel scan tool (the MX808) from authorized dealer http://www.aeswave.com - they are quick to respond to questions and happy with their service, so I recommend you go with aeswave.com

Here is the link to the Autel MX808 at AESwave website:

Thanks! I was wondering about that model.

no such thing as OBD3. Don't worry about it.

I just want to thank all of you for assisting me. You guys are very professional and very kind, and free!!! I can't thank you enough. And @Daywalker - Thank you for the list of NA products. I had no idea they had different versions or retailers and would have ended up making a huge mistake because I was going to purchase it through a non -contracted vendor.

Keep up the great work! It's very much appreciated. 🤓 🤑 😝 🤩 🤗 👍

Electronics get outdated every second. $500 is nothing in the world of scan tools and if you get a year out of it you got your money's worth. Nobody even knows if there will be an OBD-III.

Never heard of OBDIII yet in the news. In fact, most electric cars are phasing out of OBDII ports because they don't need to monitor emissions (they produce no emissions!). The standardized OBDII port was implemented mainly for monitoring emissions systems on gasoline/diesel vehicles. Modern fuel/electric cars are implementing diagnostics into the infotainment/huge dash tablets lol.
