OBDII I/M Readiness and Error Codes

Hello,

Since its the weekend and I had some time to spare I checked some basic things on my car ( Fluids, Battery etc ) everything seem to be fine apart from CAT_RDY INC.

Does this mean I have a bad sensor on the catalyst ? Anything I can do from me side to fix it ?  ( apart from driving the car around and re-checking ).

I have not recently disconnected the battery, last time I disconnected the battery should be like 1 month ago, so the catalyst test should have completed.

Thank you
Chris

Your car has to go through predetermined drive cycle. Because the monitors are self check routines, the best way to get them ready is to drive the car. But, bit of driving around the block won’t do it, … it will not - most likely- meet all the needed conditions. That’s why there is so called OBD drive cycle. But without going into details of driving cycle for your car, couple of things you can do now:

  1. First, make sure that the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) is not commanded on. Having stored or even pending diagnostic trouble codes active may prevent a monitor from running to completion.

  2. Second, complete the so called “drive cycle”. About one week of combined city and highway driving is usually enough to allow the monitors to reach complete status.

… this should do it if there is nothing wrong with your car.

I would assume that the CAT_RDY INC is there for a long while and I just noticed it because I don't have my OBDII scanner for long.

If there is indeed something wrong with the car what would be a list of things to check ?

Chances are that, just perhaps, playing with a new scan tool you actually - inadvertently - cleared or reset something. No trouble, … I would now just drive for a while and check things again. Keep an eye, specifically for
OBD Code P0420/P0430 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold .
If these codes eventually pop up, … we will deal with them than. In a meantime, just drive for a while, … but you might as well read up a bit about these codes:

No trouble at all, … we’re here to help.
Anyway, … bit more stuff on cats, how cat works and how cat is monitored. It’s a Toyota-centric vid, but it’s pretty well same for all other makes:

Just to be clear, I am sure I did not reset anything with the OBDII scan tool.

My Daihatsu Sirion from 2006 is now 15 years old and burns a bit of oil so I assume that's my issue there.
Should I buy some cat cleaner and put it in the gas tank ?. How many times should I do that ?

Also I plan on changing the PCV valve hopping that this cheap fix will have a positive effect on the oil consumption.

Any ideas if should use cat cleaner ?

Well, … I don’t know. Cats go because of other things. Scotty has a vid on cleaning a cat with a paint thinner, if I recall. Search for that and see what you think. I’m not fan of the method. Others tied it and reporting mix results.
Anyway, … I’m assuming your car has to go through annual inspection so clearing this monitor is a must. Correct?
F.S.

yikes, it was lacquer thinner. Don't put paint thinner in there.

@ Figmund Sreud   If I remember correctly I still have more than a year for the annual inspection. So its not something that should be done right away.
