Oil Stablizer Treatment/Engine Clean Detergent ??

Hello Scotty

I have a 2015 Hyundai Sonata Sport with 84,000 miles. I use Valvoline Lube to have my oil changed every 3-5,000 miles. So far I have had no major issues with car. At my recent oil change they advised I had a few metal fragments in the oil. They recommended doing an oil stabilizer treatment and engine flush. I always turn them down since I don't want to mess with the car when it seems to be running well.  Is this something I should think about doing? What does metal fragments mean when in the oil? Is my engine going to blow up? Look forward to hearing from you. Be well.

Did you see the metal shavings yourself or go off the word of someone who’s job it is to up sell as much extra service as possible. NEVER take a mechanics word make them prove to you what they’re saying is true. If you’ve been changing your oil on time and using the proper oil @ 84k mi you should have no shavings in the oil. With that being said Hyundais had a mess with the quality of their motors. Check if your vehicle has any class actions or recalls for the motor.

Normally, I would be very skeptical of claims like this. However ...

Your Hyundai Sonata has the infamous Theta II engine, which is notorious for metal debris. In fact, they were recalled because the bearings fail and cause complete destruction of the engine. So, if I were you would do your research on this issue. See if you can still get in on the extended warranty (10 years I think). There's also a class action lawsuit. (Not that it will help you any.) Changing the oil frequently might help it last a bit longer. But the various goops and snake oils they are trying to sell you will only lubricate your wallet.

Most importantly of all, listen to old Scotty --- never buy a Korean car.

Detergent additives are not needed with modern oils. If there really is metal debris coming out with the oil you have problems that will not be solved chemically. If you're not experiencing any symptoms indicating engine failure such as knocking or severe oil burning those guys may be trying to pull a fast one on you. (I would never go to a quick lube joint.)

Who, exactly is the "They" you mentioned?  What kind of oil stabilizer treatment and exactly what kind of "flush" are "They" referring to?
