Oil

Hello Scotty,

  I have 2013 BMW, 60k miles and was getting oil for my oil change. Normally I use liqui molly, however it was sold out at my local store and decided to use BMW oil from the dealership. My car, as with many were always 5w30, but dealer says they only use 0w30 now and they don't sell 5w30 any longer. From reading online it appears to actually be better to use the 0w30, but I want to know if there is any long term problems that can occur or if it's fine to use and I should start using 0w30 for all my oil changes.

        Thanks.

@kain702
its actually better here is why. i use ow-20 for my vehicle the lower the number the more it will LUBRICATE, it will still work on cold and hot weather easy. the bigger the number the bigger the molecules, and the more friction. you never ever ever want to use anything higher than what you suppose to use, because more friction will damage your camshaft and when that happens GOOOOOODBYEEEE ENGINE. 🙂

ALSO with  5w-30 they will tell you that it will burn alot less, but thats still NO reason to use a different type. another thing is common sense, if you notice your car burning way too much oil ( check your exhaust and use your finger and touch the exhaust tip inside) thats how much oil your burning. use your senses, dont go by data or crazy theories, use your senses. if it runs better GOOD JOB

My view only

The different between

5-30 vs 0-30.

Is cold start.

The weight at the front is how the oil flows at cold start.

So if you live in a warm area .. 5-30 would be ok.

But I would always use the recommend oil.

I usually use oil mix with liqmoly to help on cold start. .. would be intrested in people views.

Typically 0w-30 will flow easier and therefore increase gas mileage by a tiny fraction. I would stick with 5w-30 though if that's what it called for originally. Just use any quality oil. LiquiMoly is overpriced imo. Any full synthetic oil will be fine.

Hello there! Yes, BMW switched their recommended oil viscosity to 0w-20 and 0w-30 for their new BMW Longlife standards. You can continue to use 5w-30 if you wish. I still use Liqui Moly 5w-30 in my 2016 BMW 428i. I love Liqui Moly oil, it is the best in my opinion. I feel like 0w-20 is too thin for lubrication, especially in Southern California. And l like to have some oil weight on cold start-ups, which is why I use 5w-30. If you drive the car hard, stick with 5w-30. The move to 0w-20/30 was strictly for fuel economy standards.
