Old VWs Reliable?

Topic starter
  1. I'm looking for my "first" car, it's a used 1991 VW Jetta gli 16v manual transmission. No engine mods have been done and the paint is faded bad.
  2. How reliable and easy to maintain/fix/work on are these older VWs?
  3. Any good/bad experiences with this particular model/year?

Thank you all!

Its all about previous care and maintanence. I owned a 99 Passat 1.8T Automatic since new for 20 years and took excellent care of all fluids and maintenance. Got 220K out of it and then gave it to a friend who is still driving it! Parts however are expensive on German cars.

@porkchophill
Thanks! The current owner bought it from the original owner (his neighbor.
How difficult would maintance be on these? It has 165k miles. I'm mainly concerned about electrical issues

Better than the newer ones but any 30 year old car would need some maintenance.

From my research I found the 06 and newer to be relative piles of junk while the older ones were decent.

HI ! How do compare for exmpl those Golf (Rabbit) first generation Mk1, to the Corollas of the same time ??

@lorenc-off-mass The Corolla would be a lot less expensive to find parts for and would be more reliable.

Having owned this vintage/model of Jetta quite some time ago, yes they are easy to work on, however I wouldn't consider them reliable (especially as they age). I liked the sporty ride of the Jetta and owned it for ~7 years. Rust can be an issue with this model depending on the location it spent the past 30 years. The 2.0 engine used was quick for the era and vehicle weight. Parts should still be available as this car was available internationally.

Did you end up making the purchase?
