My really well maintained 2016 Chevy Equinox is getting to the gotta sell point, I'm at 325,000km almost all highway but when I changed the transmission filter there was a fair amount more metal particulate in the oil. Not to mention the oil consumption that's a known problem with the 2.4 eco engine. Unfortunately my affordable price range leaves Jeep Compass, Mitsubishi Outlander, or Nissan Rogue. What would you think is the best of the worst, and what should I look for when test driving,  I'll have my trusty $300 Innova scan tool (wish I had one of your infamous $3000 scan tools).

Seriously lucked out, dealer had a '17 highlander limited with about 110,000km on it only $2500 more... any issues you can think of for the year recalls etc. I remember seeing a YouTube video you did a while back on good and bad years/issues etc. But couldn't find any codes, even after a 45 minute drive and love the feel of the drive... much better than any of the Ford trucks & SUVs I've had. Thanks for all you do Scotty.

That model year was fine. It’s actually 3-4 years into that generation (which covered model years 2014-2019), and they have been holding up. Still be sure to have a good, honest independent mechanic thoroughly check it out before you buy.  Make sure recall repairs were performed, too, assuming that particular VIN was part of the recall.
