Output Shaft seal Leaking

Topic starter

On a 2015 Mazda MX-5 with approximately 55,000 miles / manual transmission. The local dealership says it has an output shaft seal leak (shaft leaving tran attached to the propeller shaft or driveshaft) . I have never seen any evidence of leakage and have never seen anything on the driveway. I have been about to change my manual trans oil anyway at 60,000. Do you think a change now with addition of the AT 205 Reseal that Scotty loves so much could fix this problem? I really don't think the leak is really that significant and am afraid that the "stealership" just wants to do some very expensive work. Would love some feedback.

I don't think it will do any good. These seals commonly wear out because there's a love of movement in the driveshaft, and no additives are going to magically erase the wear.

I would inspect the seal really well. Just because there's nothing on the driveway, it doesn't mean it isn't leaking while you drive.

It's not that big of a job, so if it's gone bad, I would replace it. I would also inspect the entire driveline, because bad seals are often a sign of other things wearing .... U-joints, pinion bearings, etc. It's worth it for your low miles car.

And don't go to the dealership of course. Find an independent mechanic.

Nothing to lose by trying. Chances of success should be greatest with a very small leak. Be sure to adjust dosage according to your transmission oil capacity.

If you put in the right amount, and it only leaks a little bit, it may be worth a shot. Afterall, you have a manual transmission, not an automatic. If, for some reason it makes it worse, you can get all of it back out.
