Overdue Manual Transmition Oil Change

Hi Scotty,

I have a 1988 Toyota Supra Turbo with 238,000 miles on the 5 speed manual transmission. The oil in the transmission has never been changed. It shifts fine.  If I change it now, will it create any problems?

@johnny
It’s a manual transmission. Just change it. It uses simple gear oil. It’s splash lubricated. Just look up a grade. It’s probably something like API service GL-4 or GL-5, SAE 75W-90 for all seasons. 80W-90 if above 10 deg. F., … but check it out if do have an owners manual.
F.S.

Btw, when draining, make sure you can open up a fill, … remove a fill plug, … because if you can’t remove a fill plug, … you won’t be able to refill your transmission, … after you drained it!

@johnnyk mileage does not mean anything, 238,000,000 miles does not mean anything either. the question is, how old is your transmission? where you the only owner? now, if you mean yourcurrent transmission has been driven for exactly 238,000 miles, iam sorry it is too late to change the fluid if only, you never changed it before. if you have been changing it frequently, yes you CAN CHANGE THE FLUID. only use original oem fluid exact quantity and ask at your car dealer for the service copy to know exactly where the fluid should be in the dip stickl,make sure if you have to have car turned off or CAR turned off after running. every car is different. please provide us with all this details. His is a manual transmission, do those same rules apply to non-automatic transmissions?
