Hello, I am going to purchase a used 2019 Honda Passport Touring with 20XXX miles and want to have it inspected because it sat on a lot for months and I got a good price at $35K which makes my kind of suspicious. I am buying from a BMW lot from out of state. Anyways, should I take it for an inspection at a Honda dealership or take it to a local mechanic? Just wondering where the best place to get the inspection is. I do not know the local mechanic, my boss told me he has used them for years and trusts them.
FYI- I am getting the care from Driveway (like Carvana) and it is backed with their warranty and 7 day return policy.
Edit I posted the carfax and this vehicle starts at 39k used in my area. and would be at least 42-45 new.
Anyways, should I take it for an inspection at a Honda dealership or take it to a local mechanic?
I would get it checked by a local mechanic, ideally one that works on a lot of Japanese cars especially Hondas.
I would never trust a dealership for a PPI. They have clowns working there that may not give you a full, honest assessment. The sheer incompetence is jaw dropping.
Thank you for a straight up answer! I appreciate you
I'd run away screaming from that deal. Places like "Driveway" and "Carvana" are today's favorite dumping grounds for people looking for a quick way to get rid of bad cars.

Amen Brother. @daywalker
A brand new Passport starts at $38,320 so no way this 3 year old car is worth $35k.

Their warranty is worth nothing in my opinion; they'll always find a way to not honor it.
You're making a huge mistake with this purchase. It's a flaky online seller and the price is ridiculously high. This sounds like the quintessential nightmare deal, even if the car does check out by a mechanic.
Driveway is Lithia Motors and i found that the car was at a KIA lot before it ended up at the BMW lot. And the price is actually lower than the OTD price I haggled from the delearship of 37K that has the car without mentioning I saw it on Driveway. These cars go far 39-42 locally where I am in Ohio.
Still, a huge mistake. Are you that desperate for a deal? Nothing is worth more than someone is willing and able to pay for it, nothing.
Could you tell what you think a good price would be to haggle with other dealerships? I want to get a 2019 honda passport touring with 20-40k miles. I dont see anything for the driveway price I got. Most start at 39. What should i shoot for in a haggle?
Why do you have to get a used car especially in this market when you can get a brand new one with $3k more?!
3K more for a sport maybe. With all the addons, I would be paying at least 45K for a trailsport. (they replaced the touring model.)
Well it seems like you're looking more for options and add ons rather than a good priced reliable car. The base trim has the standard convenience options and is a good car so again if you want a reliable car and best deal for your money buy the base 2022 brand new.
Correct, I want premium features and to save about $10k. A 3 year Honda should be the definition of reliable. If money was the biggest thing I'd buy a corolla or something. haha I know used is tricky, that is why this post asks where I should get an inspection. Thank you for your replies.
As everyone here stated that used car is not worth it in this market (would have been different if it was before covid). Also not sure if money is the biggest thing for you or not because you want to save $10k but then also say money isn't the biggest thing. You might think you're saving $10k, but the reality is you are overpaying for that used car. Anyways, everyone stated their opinions so up to you to decide.
Using a dealer for an inspection would be your second biggest mistake, besides the purchase itself.
Thank you for the replies, gents.
Using a car dealership for a pre-purchase inspection would be like asking OJ Simpson for marriage advice.
It would be a dealer i am not purchasing from. My thoughts is that they would tell me more things were wrong with it than actual and I could have Lithia pay for it.
Interesting theory but you are still dealing with a a dishonest car dealer. An independent mechanic is a far better bet. Besides, the dealer with whom you have it inspected is just going to call the selling dealer and they'll both get together to rip you off. They all know each other and work together to achieve their only goal - to get your money.
Okay, I will stick with the local mechanic shop then. Thank you
Update, I posted the Carfax and while it is easy to say it is overpriced (all cars are right now.) I am saving approx 10K by not buying a brand new one. Anyone know the best place to get it checked out? local or an actual Honda dealer
Carfax is an expensive joke that is easily manipulated by car dealers to their own advantage and the detriment of yours.
