Honda overpaid bonuses

Hi Scotti

Honda made 830 billion yen ($6.15 billion) this year. Yet despite beating wall street expectations they want to take back a bonus they already paid to their workers in Ohio. I have yet to find a single article about a Honda executive giving back their bonuses. Here are actual Americans who thought they were being rewarded for a job well done being penalized. I know they have sugar coated it with "It was a just a minor miscount and you can pay us back over time."

I owned a Honda and it did not breakdown often but it was not cheap when it did. A replacement alternator was $700 back in 1998 for my civic. There were no rebuilt units available. I bent a rim once and it was $200.  The wiper motor went bad, another $300. If I shopped around at junkyards I probably could have gotten stuff cheaper but who has the time and how long can you get along without wipers? I sold the car when the AC failed. No independent mechanic would touch it and the dealer wanted me to sign off on a $2000 minimum before they would even look at it.

I know you are dealing in repairs only and Honda's are reliable but should other things be considered?

I welcome any comments.

Okay so Honda isn't the first company out there and won't be the last one either that has asked employees to return overpayment. Regardless of how much Honda made if it genuinely was an overpayment I don't see any issue with them wanting it back. But I don't buy a car based on things like this; I buy from the manufacturer that makes reliable and good quality cars and as long as Honda keeps on doing this I will buy their cars.

being penalized.

You're confused. It's not a penalty. It's a mistake correction. They were never entitled to that money in the first place. If I go to a restaurant and accidentally pay $400 towards a $40 bill, then you better believe I want my money back, no matter how good the service was.

It's a matter for Honda employees and has nothing to do with you. Stop being a Karen.

Well I guess I have been told. A lot of people are aware of this and you never know. It's real easy these days to buy another brand. Just pass up the Honda dealer. I know I will. Whatever comes around goes around. The nagging question remains: Is six billion enough?

Comments are welcome.

Yes, a lot of annoying people are aware of this. It doesn't nag me at all because it's none of my business, and even if it was, Honda did nothing wrong. Sure, go buy another brand. Do whatever you like, but do me a favor... keep it to yourself and don't make smug posts about it. I don't care.
.
How much money do you make? How much did you tip that waitress last week? Let me tell you how you should spend your money. And if I don't like how much you make, or how you spend it, I will boycott your business. I REALLY hate this new trend by righteous do-gooders who think they are better than everyone else. This kind of thinking strongly reminds me of a certain government regime that ended up crushing freedom, and starving and killing millions of people over the course of many decades.
.
When you are running a successful international corporation of your own that builds millions of cars, then you can criticize and give away as much money as you like.

I wish I could give a thousand upvotes to your comment @mmj. It's the new nonsense out there some people are getting into that we care about the environment or we care about worker rights etc. I think it's just a new ish trend out there and people think it's cool to be a part of it. Honda or any other company decides on a certain salary for each employee and they pay them based off of that and not based on the company earnings.

You go from talking about Honda “taking back” the bonuses to your personal experience with a Honda.  Two different subjects - not sure why you bring the second topic up in this thread.

Also, I still own a 2000 Acura Integra with 321,000 miles and I never spent the amount on repairs that you cited;  my mechanic charged me way less for those items.  I love the car and still runs well, and maintenance and repair costs are relatively benign.

As @mmj says, there was no "penalty" here, it was simply correcting an error. Just as you would do yourself if you accidentally overpayed at a restaurant.

Considering research and development costs and the pressure being put on auto makers by governments, six billion may well not be enough. In any event it is not any of your concern how much money Honda makes. If you would rather buy from a car company that does not make money, you can shop at your friendly local Studebaker, Packard, Rambler, or Saab dealer.

If Honda accounting was as good as GM’s, they wouldn’t have this problem.

Honda more or less lets engineers build the car, which is why they are usually so reliable and long lived.

GM lets accountants build the cars, as cheap as possible, that is why GM cars are more or less so horrible.

I will admit the Japanese think into the future better than Americans. That's why they are where they are. Problem is you have to have bean counters or the checks bounce. My point is isn't 6 billion enough. Let the people who made that money for you keep their bonus.

All comments are welcome

Nobody is taking the employees' bonus.
If you continue to spread lies here I will ban your account.
