Grinding sound from Civic brakes

Aloha

Been noticing screeching sounds when breaking in the rear. Also almost sounds like grinding or something when breaking going downhill. Sounds rough in the rear.

Rear brakes are not disc's

Also was hearing a squishy sound in rear when applying brakes.

I don't have much experience with brakes. But I thought the front brakes are what stops the car?

And if it's the rear that stop it too. I thought if they were worn the ebrake wouldn't work good. But it works cherry. I can have it in drive or reverse and put ebrake on and doesn't move.

If anyone can help me diagnose this based on this information would be much appreciated thank you.

Rear brakes also help to stop the car but will usually last much longer.  As for the noise, first make sure shoes are not worn out then clean everything and then grease all moving parts and where side of shoes rub against the plate (just don't grease shoes).  This might help.

Why would you think that only brakes on two wheels stop the car? That sort of thing went out in the 1920s. The fronts do most of the work but the rear brakes are important as well. You need to pull the drums back there to see what's going on.

@chucktobias

Aloha about to pull it off. Tested the ebrake and in drive and accelerating still wouldn't move so pads in back should be fine?

It doesn't take much brake shoe lining for the parking brake to work. If you have never worked on drum brakes before you're in for some "fun".

@chucktobias I like how you use that term "fun"! As I did my drum brakes the last time, I think I am going to bring it to somebody else next time, it will keep my blood pressure down lol!

@nlord Drum brakes really are a pain in the posterior! I'm surprised a 2013 car would still be using those stupid things albeit only in the back.
