Hey Scotty and crew. I know the Tacoma is King of all Mid-sized trucks when it comes to being reliable. But how does the Honda Ridgeline stack up? I am in the market for buying an old used truck, and I can't stand how highly priced used tacomas are. I'm not looking to tow a boat or a fancy RV. I just want a truck for daily commute, and light towing if needed. Just wanted your opinion on what's best to get for good price that isn't a Tacoma or Ford F150.
My two concerns with the Ridgeline is the transmission and the VCM of the V6.
Transmission
Honda is using a ZF transmission. They have used their own in the past. And ZF is usually a reputable company. But they did have problems with early versions of their 9 speed. I recommend researching the ZF 9 speed to see if they actually resolved the problem. It’s been out for sometime, enough time to hopefully figure it out.
The other thing is variable cylinder management with the V6 engines. The V6 engines are amazing. They have been around for 20+ years. However, VCM has crept in due to emissions regulations. Where it shuts off 3 cylinders. There are way around it with a tune or a muzzled, and if you can keep all cylinders on, this concern would go away. I don’t think ot is that big a deal, but it is something to be conscious of.
What year(s) would you recommend then that would be worth while? Cause from what I've read, 09-12 seems to be the best, hut I want to make sure from different points of view that that type of info isn't wrong.
That seems like a good range. The latter part of the first generation. It’s the second generation where most of my concern comes in.
