2004 Matrix xr 1zzfe 1.8l engine
191,000 Miles
When I was making up my mind whether to buy this vehicle, I was pleased to see it had a timing chain rather than a rubber belt.
steel also stretches and wears. Timing chains are supposed to be good for the life of the vehicle, but they say that about transmission fluid too🤔
I had one break on an 86 Toyota pick up. i’m sure it had been abused by previous owners who probably never changed the oil but added a quart here and there
When my matrix hits the 200,000 mile mark, would it be a good idea to replace the timing chain?
On a well-designed and well-maintained engine it's not an issue. I've never heard of Toyota engines being prone to timing chain problems. Some GM engines are, and the worst was probably the Triumph Stag V8 that needed timing chain replacement at 25K intervals due to exceptionally poor design, but those are outliers. I wouldn't worry about it on a Toyota.
Additionally, timing chains give warning and will start rattling before they break. Even then it is frequently just the tensioner that needs to be replaced. (My car has over 360K miles on the original timing chain and it's still silent.)
engine timing chains swim through the engine oil so they get plenty of lubrication and cooling.
In most cases, the chain DOES last the lifetime of the engine.
In other words, when it wears out, so does the rest of the engine.
If you don’t have symptoms, you don’t need to. Also, since it is a non-interference engine, if it breaks, it won’t hurt the engine. Change the oil frequently and you will be fine.
Usually I can Google an engine or make and model and find out if it has a timing belt, timing chain, and if it is an interference or non-interference engine. Search results come with conflicting opinions about the 1ZZFE.
I would never let a timing chain, guides and tensioners go more than 150K miles before changing them out just for the peace of mind.
