[Solved] Replacing Ignition and Key Programming

Topic starter

2011 Ram 1500 Ignition switch has gone bad. I have the new Ignition switch to put in plus 2 blank keyfobs. My truck originally came with regular keys not keyfob style. I have an Xtool d7 scanner to program the keys. Do i first get the code with the original switch installed or put the new one in, get the code and then erase the 2 keys that are in the system and then program the key fobs and the original 2 keys that came with the truck?

Thanks Much

You would have to put the new switch in first and then program from there. Now. I don't know if that scan tool will be able to do that because I've only ever used it to reprogram a new key with the same old system. It may or may not be able to do that. I don't know. You'd have to contact the company to see if it's able to do that

@scottykilmer hi Scotty thanks for the reply. The Xtool D7 allowed me to program a new module with a few key fobs. I bought that scanner because I saw your video on it so thanks. Well truck still does not start. Starter I put in was about 2 years ago. I bought a relay jumper with an on an off switch. When I flipped to on there was a big click and a spark from where the starter was from. I turned it on again no spark but I did here a big click. When I am able to get under the truck after some of the ice and snow melt I’ll give it a big whack with a hammer to see if that enables me to start the truck. Any ideas you may have please mention. Learned a ton from your videos and I send everyone I know to your channel to learn things 👍

Scotty does not usually return to topics he has already answered. Since this no-start issue is a different problem you should really post a new topic about it per the forum rules.
