Hi Scotty,

Thank you for your useful videos to help us out with your experience and the entertaining way to express it. 😀

Did you hear about Schaeffer oil and if yes, what do think about it?

I bought 5 years ago a 2014 RAM trademan 4x4 with a HEMI V8 5.7l and the only previous owner was using this brand of oil, changing it every 5000 miles.

I continued to use it but following the Ram computer milage recommandation to change it, so about every 10000 miles +/-, each time with a Mobil 1 M1-113A Extended Performance Oil Filter. I heard it is better to stay consistant with the oil brand all along the engine life, so even I don't believe it is so important, I did.

The previous owner said he used 5W-30 instead of the 5W-20 rcommanded by Dodge for this HEMI engine. Apparently, someone could have recommended him that with this brand of oil he should go with this viscosity to fit better the requirement of this engine. I looked at the data sheets of both viscosities of these oils on   https://www.schaefferoil.com/ and the differences in the numbers and descriptions are rare and when existing quite small according to me.

He was doing about 30000 miles per year so I got the truck with a bit more than 90000 after his used of 3 years. I have 135000 miles on the odo today so you can see I am not driving as much as he was.

Some not so important details: since the begining he got this pickup truck, he had installed a lift kit (4 or 5 inches), 35x12.5x17LT tires and he added a dual exhaust homemade with standard steal pipes (he was a welder) which did rust so I had change it recently for a stainless steal dual exhaust from Rough Country (very good rate for the quality). I added an air intake instead of the standard air box, that I can clean insteaded of changing the original filter, but that is it, everything else is from RAM.

Well, does it change anything to stay with this brand and keeping my oil change according RAM cpu requests (I don't know if RAM has sensors giving data to measure that or if it is just a time/milage set in the ICU) or should I go with a cheaper oil, the one recommanded by RAM for instance, and change my oil and filter more often like every 5000? And what about the 5W-20 versus 5W-30 story?

I am sure you heard a lot of oil stories like this one but I couldn't find any including Schaeffer which has a ton of good review on website and no unhappy consumer.

Thank you and please continu to share your knowledge the way you do, it is accessible and clear, even if it has to include lot of data, I like details !!!

Gabe

No miracle product, so simple is still matching with common sens then... Thank you 🙂

You can use any oil that meets your vehicle manufacturer's specifications. No matter what you use or what the oil manufacturer claims it is best to change oil and filter every 5,000 miles if you want your engine to last.

Don't fall for wild claims about engine oil.  Just make sure it meets specifications in your manual and change it regularly.
