For this late 90’s early 2000’s Honda Accord manual transmission, when Scotty changed the clutch and throw out bearing, he basically left the transmission in the car, and just opened the transmission up to change it.
But watching other videos, they seemed to take apart half the car, removed half of the transmission outside the car.
Granted, Scotty has years of experience so, he probably knows all the tricks to get around the nooks and crannies, let alone developed the dexterity to maneuver in such a tight space.
But for a layman like me, which would be the better way to attack the problem, with less hassle, less error, and less time? Like Scotty, keeping everything mostly intact? Or taking apart half the transmission, and many parts of the engine bay?
Pretty impressive of Scotty, changing out a clutch in like 4 minutes! 😉
If you look closely at the video, what he did was not take apart the transmission, he pulled it back from the engine to create enough clearance to get at the clutch assembly. Depending on the car it may or may not be possible to do that versus actually taking the transmission out entirely.
Easiest clutch I've worked on is the old Saab 900 (1979-1993). No need for major disassembly, you just remove some plumbing and a plastic cover up front and everything is right there.
