So I purchased a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu LS back in 2020 with only about 54,000 miles on it. There were no problems until about 8 months later, the brakes started squeaking when braking and I could tell the pads needed to be replaced. I took it to a shop and had the brakes worked on and replaced, got the car back and for the first few miles it was fine then started with the noise again. I called the shop and they said to bring it back in, only to notify me that they’d “accidentally put recalled parts” on the vehicle. So they redid everything and gave the car back. It was fine for about 50 miles then started with the noises again but even more intense. I called and brought it back to the shop again, for them to say they couldn’t recreate the noise. I took the car and scheduled a ride along with a mechanic to demonstrate the noise, but when I came in for the appointment he said he heard it when I pulled up and didn’t need to do the ride along. He replaced “all of the hardware” (his words) and even upgraded my pads to the best ones they could put on there. When I got the car back it was still squeaking and squealing and sometimes even grinding even more so and louder than ever and it’s continued to get worse and worse. I took it in a couple more times for them to return it and claim that they were stumped and couldn’t find the cause of the noise and had no recommendations for what actions I should take next. At this point it almost feels like the noise is posing danger, the brakes work fine and come to a great stop but the noise is unbearable. It’s cyclic sounding and only happens with certain amounts of brake pressure at certain speeds and sometimes it’s not cyclic and is just a solid squeak or squeal. Sometimes there’s a grinding sound, sometimes there isn’t, but there is always a noise when I’m braking anywhere around 45 mph until I stop with light-medium braking force applied from me. I’m at a loss at this point.
I forgot to add that the noise is coming from the front brakes only, my apologies
Use quality brake pads (Scotty recommends Akebono) and find another shop or do it yourself.
Have somebody check your front wheel bearings. They are almost 14 years old and probably have never been repacked.
Yeah the wheel bearings have been checked, it’s not them.
You could also get a tube of "Disc Brake Quiet", a blue compound that is smeared on the back of the pads to stop the squealing, if they still even make it anymore. I think it's a Permatex product.
