Starter issues?

Hi Scotty,

I have owned a 1992 Honda Accord LX for the past 10 years and apart from the usual wear and tear (breaks, battery, tires, exhaust...), it has never given me any major problems. It had 26,700 kilometers and was in pristine condition when I bought it. The little old ladies driving the car to church stories are true! 🙂 I've always taken good care of this faithful old gal, but in the past 8 months or so, the starting has become intermittent. 9 times out of 10, it cranks and revs up no problem. But once in a while, it cranks but just won't "catch". When this happens, a yellow check engine light appears. I have to turn it off and start it again, and THEN it catches... Even after having replaced the alternator, the fuel pump, the battery, redone most of the wiring, it still fails me on occasion. What's up with that?

Thanks,

V.

Whats the code?

It's an OBD1, so I got the code the "old fashioned" way (a paper clip worked well enough). Before the battery was changed, I had a 04 code: crank position sensor. But now, no more code...

@vinnyh
I've had an issue where there was 1 bolt holding the crank sensor on and it was loose. It would cause an issue like this.

Did you scan the code for the CEL? Maybe the crankshaft position sensor.

@inthrustwetrust
Yeah, an 04 code showed crank position sensor, but since the battery was changed, the "computer" has been reset and the code has now disappeared. Sounds good, but that still doesn't solve the starter problem. Bummer... I'll try your tricks and see what happens. If they fail, sounds like a bad distributor, huh?

@VinnyH
Could very well be the distributor on an old Honda. Follow the steps in Scotty’s video.
