I have a 1989 Ford F250 RWD EFI 5.8 L E4OD
Sometimes when I start it, I hear what sounds like the starter screeching against the flywheel. Do I most likely have a worn bendix, or a worn flywheel? after I have driven the vehicle, it will usually start, but it seems harder to start each time. The ignition key cylinder also is a little sluggish. Sometimes it does not return quickly and causes the screeching sound momentarily. Sometimes it gets stuck where I have to finagle with it to get the key in. I do not have a tilt steering wheel.
What do I need to replace or service to get that key cylinder working right, and should I go ahead and replace the starter?
There's probably an inspection plate you can remove to examine the flywheel. Or, you could pull the starter and examine the Bendix drive.
After 36 years it is likely your key cylinder is just worn out. You could try lubing it to see if that helps. I had a locksmith recommend "Tri-Flow" lubricant and have had success with that.
