Strater screaming?

Topic starter

07 Chevy Impala, 145k miles, auto

Got it for free today, runs and drives. Engine light blinking, misfire. Checked compression all are about 160. So it's good.

Small leak in radiator, doesn't overheat.

But the weirdest thing it's doing, that I'm asking about on here is under acceleration and sometimes even once it's started the alternator or starter will start screeching really loud.

Also noticed around the terminals on the plastic part of battery, is kinda black....

Engine light blinking, misfire.

Check engine light blinking means stop driving immediately to avoid further damage.

It could be a lot of things, probably a belt-driven accessory. See Scotty's videos on finding car noises.

Once the engine is started (the key goes from start to run) the starter and solenoid turn off. Have you ever accidentally tried to start an already running car? It makes a horrible grinding noise, not a screeching sound.

It sounds like it's belt-driven. Engines idle higher when they're first started, which increases tension on the belt, any worn pulleys will start screeching. Take the belt off, inspect it, and inspect the individual pulleys. They should all glide smoothly and not hang up or wiggle. If one or more wiggle or hang up, replace the component.
